Complex flow patterns computational fluid dynamics

Complex three-dimensional models, e.g., CFD (computational fluid dynamics), aim to solve the gas conditions and particle motion throughout the dryer. They are the only effective models for spray dryers because of the complex swirling flow pattern they can also be used to find localized conditions in other dryers. 

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are beginning to be developed for certain types of extractors to better understand flow patterns in column extractors. Due to the complex weave pattern for LAD screens, it is difficult to derive an exact solution for the flow through a LAD screen. An empirical solution from Armour and Cannon (1968) has been proposed, as well as basic computational fluid dynamics simulations from Zhang et al. (2009) for the flow through a LAD screen. Using the logic from Armour and Cannon (1968), the approximate solution is formulated as the sum of the pressure drop due to viscous (laminar) and inertial (turbulent) resistance. 

The flow becomes highly complex in a spiral-wound module containing a feed-side spacer screen. Numerical solutions of the governing equations incorporating most of these complexities have been/are being implemented (Wiley and Fletcher, 2003) using computational fluid dynamics models (see Schwinge et al. (2003) for the complex flow patterns in a spacer-filled channel).
