Compartmentation services

Photorespiration is a particular problem for so-called C3 plants, which include most trees and shrubs. Grasses are mostly C4 plants, and escape the worst excesses of photorespiration by compartmentalizing their photosynthetic machinery. They capture carbon dioxide and then release it in large amounts into the cellular compartment containing Rubisco. In these circumstances COz out-competes 02 for the services of Rubisco. [Pg.81]

Compartmentation is vital for the safety of the building and its occupants. However, a building, whioh has compartment walls and floors with no openings, has very limited use. There are always occasions when a compartmentation wall or floor must be breached in order for occupants to move around and the building to befitted with services. It is when these necessary breaches are made in compartmentation that it is absolutely vital that the compartmentation maintains its integrity against fire spread. [Pg.182]

In many cases services and the holes in compartments are stopped with cement mortar or other noncombustible material. However, proprietary fire stopping and sealing systems are now widely available and are often used to seal the area around a breach in the compartmentation. These proprietary systems, such as intumescent pillows, offer a relatively inexpensive and flexible method to control fire spread. Other common fire stopping materials include ... [Pg.185]

During the practical risk assessment process it was noted that a number of service risers were insecure. That the doors to the risers were defective and were not fitted with intumescent strips and that the risers themselves were likely to act as a chimney due to the lack of fire compartmentation between each of the building s floors. [Pg.336]
