Data mining comparative

In comparative data mining, one distinguishes between overlay analysis and the retrieval of patterns from one or several data sets given a set of patterns of interest. The latter task is also known as retrieval by content [8], Typical manifestations of comparative data mining in drug discovery are for example similarity analysis of chemical compounds [33], or the comparison of large chemical libraries [34],... [Pg.679]

All four of the proteomic technologies mentioned above (2D-PAGE, HPLC, MS, and protein arrays) are dependent on the use of bioinformatics as a tool for data mining and elucidation. Often, MS runs generate lists of thousands of potential peptide biomarkers, and only with the help of dedicated software tools can the data be analyzed. Computer searches involving databanks of peptides and proteins are used to compare the lists of masses of the proteolytic peptides to theoretical proteolytic products. Matches between the observed mass and the calculated mass can serve as a way of identifying proteins of interest [28-32],... [Pg.165]

Public databases allow the scientihc community to publish, share, and compare the data obtained from toxicology and toxicogenomics experiments (see Chapter 6). They are a resource for data mining, and for the discovery of novel genes/proteins through their coexpression with known molecules. They also help to identify and minimize the use of experimental practices that introduce undesirable variability into toxicogenomics datasets. [Pg.132]
