The scientific literature regarding marine organic matter is the cumulative result of research in several traditional scientific disciplines, each with its own specialized definitions and acronyms. This review must draw upon all of that literature, so it is beneficial to introduce some of the specialized terminology that will be encountered by the reader. A useful introduction is provided by simply compiling a list of commonly used acronyms, all of which are defined and used in the definitive volume on marine organic matter that was published recently by Hansell and Carlson (2002).

There are two approaches to pulse sequence classification depending on the user s occupation. For the chemist who has to solve a structural question or characterize a new compound it is the spectra obtained from the pulse sequence that is of primary importance. The NMR spectroscopist is usually more concerned with the pulse sequence structure and choice of experimental parameters and whether a particular pulse sequence can be improved or modified to solve a specific problem. These two different approaches lead to confusion in pulse sequence nomenclature such that names are often a combination of the purpose of the experiment and the sequence layout. For example the commonly used acronyms HMQC, HSQC and HMBC imply a consistent abbreviation system yet HMQC and HSQC describe the coherence state during the evolution time whilst HMBC denotes an experiment to correlate nuclei using multiple bond heteronuclear scalar coupling.

ALARA and ALARP are commonly used acronyms in risk assessment and reduction activities. ALARA stands for as low as reasonably achievable, ALARP is short for as low as reasonably practicable. To retain coherence with the more detailed descriptions found in the references, the equations and descriptions in this chapter closely follow the referenced works whenever possible. In particular, this means that the variable definitions are not uniform throughout the chapter but are defined with respect to each specific coupling methodology. Also, since it is expected that many readers will refer primarily to individual sections, several commonly used acronyms are defined more than once and a table of acronyms is included at the end of this chapter.
