The gaseous compound used to carry out the diffusion is UFg. Various physical and chemical properties of UFg make it the only known suitable compound. It is a solid at room temperature consequently, the diffusion plant had to operate at temperatures and pressures to maintain UFg in gaseous form. Although it is a stable compound, UFg is extremely reactive with water, very corrosive to most common metals, and incompatible with organic materials (e.g., lubricating oils). Two substances which have no hazardous reactivity properties in themselves can become dangerous when mixed.
