Commingled Polymers

The halide-containing (co)polymers, such as PVC or PVDC, recovered from commingled polymer scrap were contaminated by low melting point PA S [e.g., PA-6, PA-1212 or PARA]. The recyclate was compatibilized and impact modified by addition of an acrylic copolymer of ethylene, alkyl(meth)acrylate, vinylacetate, (meth)acrylic acid, CO and MA. To prevent degradation, the blends were processed at T < 220°C, then formed by extrusion or injection molding into a variety of articles [Hofmann, 1994]. [Pg.1145]

Another important application of thermoplastic fibers such as poly ether ether ketone (PEEK), Poly etherimide(PEI), and VectranM andHS (Vectranis the trade mark of Hoechst liquid crystalline polymer) is in making thermoplastic matrix composites. Commingled yams of the reinforcement and matrix such as quartz/PEEK, glass/PEI, Vectran HS/M are used to make the composites wherein the matrix yarn fuses to form the continuous phase of the composite. [Pg.102]

For example, at 250°C the polymers will be mutually soluble only for PS concentrations less than 0.096 mole fraction or greater than 0.913 mole fraction. Thus the two polymers can be commingled for recycling only in limited proportions. ... [Pg.610]

Compatibilization and upgrading of commingled plastics for reprocessing, and (3) Recycling of polymer blends [Akovali et al., 1998]. [Pg.93]

The major problem in the reprocessing of commingled plastics, and therefore of utmost importance for PAB s, is the immiscibility of most polymers so that poor mechanical properties develop when they are blended together. Ways to enhance the mechanical behavior of these mixtures include adding a compatibilizer, adding a mbbery phase to impact modify the blend, or adding a reinforcement to restore mechanical properties. [Pg.975]
