Combi PAL

SPME was carried out in 20 ml headspace vials (Shimadzu) with a CTC Combi Pal system auto injector at 70 °C for 60 min using a StableFlex fibre with an 85 pm Carboxen / PDMS coating (Sigma). Prior to analyses 0.8 pg -camphor solved in 4 pi isopropanol were added as internal standard. 

Classical liquid-liquid and liquid-solid extractions are recently receiving additional examination, as new injection techniques for GC have made very simple, low-volume extractions feasible. Recently, several commercial systems for large-volume liquid injections (up to 150 pL all at once, or up to 1 to 2 mL over a short period of time) have become available. When combined with robotic sampling systems, these have become powerful tools in the trace analysis of a variety of sample types. Due to its simplicity, classical liquid-liquid extraction is often the method of choice for sample preparation. Some of the robotic samplers available for this type of analysis, such as the LEAP Technologies Combi-PAL robotic sampler, which has been licensed by several instrument vendors, are also capable of performing automated SPME and SHE. 

In principle, this method uses a fiber coated with an adsorbent that can extract organic compounds Irom the headspace above a liquid or solid sample. Extracted compounds are desorbed upon exposure of the SPME fiber in the heated injector port of a gas chromatograph (GC). SPME was carried out with a CTC Combi Pal system autoinjector at 70°C for 60 min using a fibre with an 85 pm polyacrylate coating. SPME sampling was done in the headspace above the surface of 5 ml diluted, acetate-buffered urine (containing 2 ml urine 2.5 ml water 0.5 ml 2 M acetate-buffer, pH 4.8 1.83 g NaCI, and 2 pg undecanoic acid as internal standard) in 20 ml headspace vials (Shimadzu).
