Combat stress reaction

A. Stress. Medical management of stress reactions for patients suffering from real or imagined laser injuries is similar to stress management of other injuries. Repeat the reassurance that symptoms will improve with rest, nutrition, hygiene, and the expectancy of an early return to the soldier s unit. For specific combat stress control procedures, see FM 8-51. [Pg.216]

Humans who have experienced some severe psychological traumatic event may even develop an altered psychological state to deal with the event. The sudden death of a loved one, involvement in a serious car accident, or combat experience can produce a traumatic reaction that may include a denial state characterized by sleep disturbances, amnesia, fatigue, and headaches (Smith, 1998). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), also called shell shock or battle fatigue is common to those who have had to face extreme distress in military or civilian Ufe. PTSD is characterized by negative emotional reactions beyond coping. [Pg.361]

A discussion is presented of problems associated with the corrosion of nonmetallic materials and of aspects of solid-state reactions related to corrosion processes. The effects of the various characteristics of surfaces and of attacking agents are considered, and the kinetics and some possible mechanisms of solid-state reactions are briefly reviewed. The effects of transition states, through their influence on reactivity, and of extreme environmental stresses are noted, as are epitaxial effects and effects produced by adsorbed gases. Emphasis is placed on the need for further research on problems of the corrosion of such materials as glasses, ceramics, plastics, and natural and synthetic stones, as well as on the need for interdisciplinary cooperation to help combat these problems. [Pg.18]
