The breath from people suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis) and irritable bowel syndrome has been studied using PTR-MS with the view to diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases [2]. In the same investigation, PTR-MS was also used to detect the VOC content of the headspace air above fluid taken from the gut of these patients during colonoscopy. Significant differences in the mass spectra were found for both the fluid headspace and in breath when compared with that obtained from healthy volunteers. [Pg.278]
