However, our understanding of the groundwater flow patterns is often an iterative process. Chemicals and isotopes can be excellent indicators of the directions and rates of groundwater flow. One goal of geochemical modeling can be to help determine the directions and rates of groundwater flow. 

In order to model chemical reactions in a specific system, we need to know the geochemical properties of the aquifer. Any study of fluid/sediment/mineral interactions requires knowledge of both chemical compositions of fluids and mineralogical compositions of the solid matrix.
