As in vertebrate collagens, assembly of each collectin subunit occurs in a C- to N-terminal direction [22]. Peptides encompassing the CRDs and neck regions assemble into trimers in the absence of the N-terminal domains [32, 33]. Assembly and association of these domains in collectins acts as the nucleation site for formation of the collagen triple helix that in turn enables formation of the disulfide bonds at the N-teiminal end of the molecule.
