Nagamine et al. used SECM to study S. aureus trapped in nanoliter collagen-gel matrixes localized on a chip. In the presence of Fe(CN)/ , the respiratory chain located within the cytoplasmic membrane of S. aureus cells produces FelCNjg, which can be monitored by the SECM tip. The authors found that the ferricyanide reduction activity in the S. aureus, an osmotolerant bacteria, is enhanced in response to high osmotic stress such as the presence of highly concentrated salts. 

Three-dimensional matrix substrates have been extensively used in vitro to study differentiation of endothelial cells into vessel-like structures fibrin and collagen gels have proven good substrates (Montesano et al., 1983 Montesano et al., 1992) however, the extensive time required for these assays is a major limiting factor. 

The dermis provides support for the epidermis and also plays a role in regulating temperature, pressure and pain. The dermis mainly consists of collagen fibres, which provide the support, and elastic connective tissue, which provides elasticity, in a semi-gel matrix of mucopolysaccharides. The dermis contains an extensive vascular network with many arteriovenous anastomoses which are critical to the functions of heat regulation and blood vessel control.
