The absorption of some drugs may also be reduced if they are given with adsorbents such as charcoal or kaolin, or anionic exchange resins such as colestyramine or colestipol. The absorption of propranolol, digoxin, warfarin, tricyclic antidepressants, ciclosporin and levothyroxine is reduced by colestyramine.

Cholestyramine and Colestipol. Other interactions involving complexation might be anticipated when cholestyramine (e.g., Questran) and colestipol (Coles-tid) are used. These resinous materials, which are not absorbed from the GI tract, bind with bile acids and prevent their reabsorption. In addition, cholestyramine and colestipol can bind with drugs (e.g., digoxin and warfarin) that are present in the GI tract. To minimize the possibility of an interaction, the interval between the administration of cholestyramine or colestipol and another drug should be as long as possible.

Colesevelam appears to be less likely to interfere with the absorption of concurrently administered drugs. No significant decreases in absorption were seen when colesevelam was coadministered with either digoxin, lovastatin, warfarin, metoprolol, quinidine, or valproic acid. Because of potential interactions, especially for drugs with a low therapeutic index, the administration of drugs that have not been directly studied in combination with colesevelam should be spaced accordingly, as described above tor cholestryamine and colestipol (7,15). 

Colestipol appears not to interfere with the absorption of either digoxin or digitoxin if it is given at least 1.5 hours after the digitalis glycoside. 

This interaction is not well established. Giving either digoxin or digitoxin 1.5 hours before colestipol appears to avoid any possible interaction in the gut. It is usually recommended that other drugs are given 1 hour before or 4 hours after colestipol.
