Cognitive fixation

Cognitive fixation and plan continuation are compounded by stress and fatigue. These two factors make it more difficult for controllers to juggle multiple hypotheses about a problem or to project a situation into the future by mentally simulating the effects of alternative plans [50]. 

Today, and during the last 20 years, so-called design fixation is the subject of systematic studies by cognitive psychologists. According to Youmans and Arciszewski (2014) this term can be defined thus ...

The most sensitive predictors of later cognitive function are total looking time and duration of longest fixation, both of which decline with age (Fagen and Ohr, 2001) infants whose fixation times do not decline with age are showing slower processing speed and would be considered as being at risk (Colombo, 1993)... 

In this field, researchers vigorously pursued cognitive-based design fixation research and abstractly defined as barriers to solution based on real and perceived constraints [4,10,11].
