Silicon—Ca.rbon Thermoset. The Sycar resins of Hercules are sihcon—carbon thermosets cured through the hydrosilation of sihcon hydride and sihcon vinyl groups with a trace amount of platinum catalyst. The material is a fast-cure system (<15 min at 180°C) and shows low moisture absorption that outperforms conventional thermosets such as polyimides and epoxies. Furthermore, the Sycar material provides excellent mechanical and physical properties used in printed wiring board (PWB) laminates and encapsulants such as flow coatable or glob-top coating of chip-on-board type apphcations. [Pg.189]

A surface is that part of an object which is in direct contact with its environment and hence, is most affected by it. The surface properties of solid organic polymers have a strong impact on many, if not most, of their apphcations. The properties and structure of these surfaces are, therefore, of utmost importance. The chemical stmcture and thermodynamic state of polymer surfaces are important factors that determine many of their practical characteristics. Examples of properties affected by polymer surface stmcture include adhesion, wettability, friction, coatability, permeability, dyeabil-ity, gloss, corrosion, surface electrostatic charging, cellular recognition, and biocompatibility. Interfacial characteristics of polymer systems control the domain size and the stability of polymer-polymer dispersions, adhesive strength of laminates and composites, cohesive strength of polymer blends, mechanical properties of adhesive joints, etc. [Pg.871]

Two of the main considerations in the development of totally reactive liquid photopolymer systems are the resin(s) and the reactive diluents (monomers). The resins play a major role in determining the end properties and therefore the applications of the cured polymer. The reactive diluents are used to provide a fully reactive system with the appropriate reactivity, viscosity, coatability before cure and the desired crosslink density, chemical resistance and dielectric character once it is cured. The pho-toreactive monomers most commonly used are acrylate based derivatives because of the properties they impart, and their high reactivity and wide solubility range. [Pg.439]

The concentration of a small molecule reactant inside the polymer coils can be lower than outside when one uses a poor solvent for the polymer. This results in lower local and overall reaction rates. In the extreme, a poor solvent results in reaction occurring only on the surfaces of a polymer. Surface reactions are advantageous for applications requiring modification of surface properties without affecting the bulk physical properties of a polymer, such as modification of surface dyeability, biocompatibility, adhesive and frictional behavior, and coatability [Ward and McCarthy, 1989]. [Pg.731]

The affinity of Cgo towards carbon nucleophiles has been used to synthesize polymer-bound Cgo [120] as well as surface-bound Cjq [121]. Polymers involving G q [54, 68, 69] are of considerable interest as (1) the fullerene properties can be combined with those of specific polymers, (2) suitable fullerene polymers should be spin-coatable, solvent-castable or melt-extrudable and (3) fullerene-containing polymers as well as surface-bound Cgo layers are expected to have remarkable electronic, magnetic, mechanical, optical or catalytic properties [54]. Some prototypes of polymers or solids containing the covalently bound Cjq moiety are possible (Figure 3.11) [68,122] fullerene pendant systems la with Cjq on the side chain of a polymer (on-chain type or charm bracelet ) [123] or on the surface of a solid Ib [121], in-chain polymers II with the fullerene as a part of the main chain ( pearl necklace ) [123], dendritic systems III, starburst or cross-link type IV or end-chain type polymers V that are terminated by a fullerene unit For III and IV, one-, two-and three-dimensional variants can be considered. In addition, combinations of all of these types are possible. [Pg.93]
