Co-activator

Donor and acceptor levels are the active centers in most phosphors, as in zinc sulfide [1314-98-3] ZnS, containing an activator such as Cu and various co-activators. Phosphors are coated onto the inside of fluorescent lamps to convert the intense ultraviolet and blue from the mercury emissions into lower energy light to provide a color balance closer to daylight as in Figure 11. Phosphors can also be stimulated directly by electricity as in the Destriau effect in electroluminescent panels and by an electron beam as in the cathodoluminescence used in television and cathode ray display tubes and in (usually blue) vacuum-fluorescence alphanumeric displays.

Coactivators enhancing the transcriptional activity of steroid hormone receptors activators include SRC-1 (steroid-receptor co-activator 1) or TEF2 (transcriptional intermediary factor 2), which are recruited by the DNA/ steroid hormone receptor complex. Their main role is to attract other transcriptional coactivators with histone acetyltransferase activity in order to decondense chromatin and allow for the binding of components of the general transcription apparatus.

In chemically-cured materials, one example of an initiator/activator system is hydrogen peroxide as initiator, ascorbic acid as activator and cupric sulphate as co-activator. In light-cured materials, camphorquinone is used as a visible-light photochemical initiator, sodium p-toluene-sulphinate as activator and ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate as photoaccelerator.

The formation of 22 is only observed in the presence of 7, which obviously plays an important role in the CO-activation process. 

A prerequisite for CO activation in 6 is an O-attack of the silane at the coordinated carbonyl ligand. This activation step induces the reduction of CO by formal electron transfer Mn—>C and yields a highly reactive 17e intermediate siloxycarbyne complex which dimerizes to give 8. 

Examples for a similar reaction pathway are well documented in the literature. Berry and Bercaw have reported CO-activation in Cp (OC)Fe(ft-CO>2Fe(CO)Cp 24 by Cp 2ZrN2 2N2 23 and subsequent reductive CC-coupling to form 25 (Scheme 4) [17],... 

CO-activation has also been observed with a variety of Lewis-acids of Ti, Al, Mg or Yb-complexes. In particular the problem of O-activation has been investigated extensively by Shriver [18]. 

The variation of the substituent pattern of the introduced silane provides further insight into the reaction mechanism of the CO activation process of scheme 2 (Table 1) The yield of ju-carbyne-complex (O-attack of the silane) compared to silyl hydride formation (Mn-attack of the silane) is a function of the Lewis-acidity of the silane. However, even with the strongly acidic HSiCl3 as reagent, the product ratio 12/13 is still 1 9. 

We describe a further reaction channel involving CO-activation by O-attack of the silane (C) and subsequent carbyne-complex formation by electron transfer M—>C and dimerization of the formed 17e intermediate to a stable /i-biscarbyne complex 8 (Chart 1).
