DMS has been observed in the marine atmosphere since the early 1970s, but it was not until the mid-1980s that there was interest in this gas as being a natural source for sulfate CCN. Climate studies conducted within the AT project have compared the skill of RCMs in reproducing observed means and extremes, examined how climate change will affect mean precipitation and mean temperature and examined the estimated future occurrence of extreme precipitation and varied aspects of hydrology for Europe, Spain and the Ebro [35, 36]. 

Phase transitions, although rarely described in these terms represent the second example of chemical change in the local environment. The most familiar example is transformation between the phases of water, which is responsible for all observed climatic and weather changes on the planet. Volcanic activity is another dramatic manifestation of phase transformations.
