Cleavage, single crystals

Epitaxial crystallization was accomplished by the immersion of a preheated substrate (the substrates for epitaxial crystallization were single crystals of alkali halides from Harshaw Chemical Co.) into the monomer solution followed by its in-situ cleavage to expose two fresh (100) surfaces. 

Ervafoline did not fragment under the acidic conditons used for the cleavage of other bisindole alkaloids. The complete structure and relative stereochemistry of ervafoline, as shown in formula 246, were determined by a single-crystal X-ray study. 

Single crystals of zinc were broken106 by two cleavage and one tensile method. The 7 was about 100,400, and 575 erg/cm2, respectively, for these three arrangements. Also this wide spread of results is easier to reconcile with the new than with the Griffith theory. 

The nucleation of these decomposition processes was studied by means of thermomicroscopy on single crystal cleavage plates of calcite, magnesite, dolomite and smithsonite (Fig. 59). The shape of the nuclei was found to be different for these carbonates, which might be also of importance for the decomposition mechanism. The partial pressure of water vapor has a pronounced effect on the decomposition of transition metal carbonates such as ZnC03 and CdC03. The evolution of C02 is probably catalyzed in the presence of water vapor and shifted to considerably...

Zinc crystallizes in a hexagonal close-packed system its basal face (0001) was prepared by cleavage of single crystal at the temperature of liquid nitrogen, and the prismatic face (1010) and the face (1120) were prepared by polishing in nitric acid [2]. 

In the course of investigations on a-sulphanyl carbenes, a new cleavage reaction was found. After irradiation the phosphorus ylide 53 yields nearly quantitatively the thiaazaphosphetane 54, in addition to triphenylphosphine (55) (equation 20)98. An insertion of the corresponding carbene intermediate in to the methine—CH bond is plausible. The structure of 54 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis98. 

As SSBs are concerned, data are available on single crystals of dsODNs of different composition (Debije et al. 2001 Razskazovskiy et al. 2003a, 2003b). There is little base sequence specificity and preference of 5 -cleavage vs 3 -cleavage. Although there is a certain span for G(SSB) among the various systems studied ((-0.4-1.4) x 10-7 mol J-1), these data clearly point to the importance of SSB formation by the direct effect.
