Clathrate hydrates hydrogen storage

The structures of mixed H2-THF clathrate hydrates, of possible relevance for medium-pressure hydrogen fuel storage, have been reviewed <2006AGE2011>. 

Among tens of compounds which are known to form clathrate hydrates with water molecules, the majority form either si or sll, with a few exceptions such as dimethyl ether (DME) forming sH [13]. Since these exceptions are not related to hydrogen storage, they are not described here in detail. The reader is referred to the review of Loveday and Nelmes [14] for further information. Sloan and Koh [9] presented an extensive list of hydrate-forming compounds. 

The theoretical developments for hydrogen storage in molecular clathrates have been discussed extensively by Struzhkin et al. [1]. They explained that the complete theoretical description of hydrogen clathrate hydrates is usually based on a combination of different techniques including density functional theory (DFT) [34], molecular dynamicss (MD) [35], and similar approaches.

For the above three classes of material, the main challenge is to find ways by which they can be engineered to store high levels of hydrogen, reversibly, at close to room temperature.
