Classification of Stored Commodities

Select the correct sprinkler system to protect the building from a fire for the commodities stored there. Commodities are classified according to how fast they burn and how much heat they release. Table 5-2 identifies the classification of stored commodities. As an example, plastics bum quickly and produce twice the heat of burning wood. 

Commodities are divided into five classes that have increasing requirements for sprinkler protection  

Products stored in a warehouse may vary from time to time, so a system should be chosen that will provide adequate protection for many years. The following changes may affect the level of protection needed. 

Essentially noncombustible. Might be in light cartons. Might be on wooden pallets. 

Class I products with more and/or heavier combustibie packaging and containers.
