Claimant nations

During the IGY 12 nations established 55 research stations in Antarctica where more than 5,000 scientists made measurements of various geophysical parameters (Crary 1982). This level of participation was made possible because all of the nations that had claimed territory in Antarctica agreed not to enforce these claims and to cooperate fully not only with the claimant but also with the non-claimant nations ... 

Claimant nations Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, United Kingdom. 

Non-claimant nations Belgium, Japan, South Africa, Soviet Union, and the United States of America. 

This arrangement not only permitted the nonclaimant nations to conduct research in Antarctica but it also encouraged the claimant nations to cooperate with each other. 

In A Others v. National Blood Authority Others the claimants had been infected with hepatitis C in blood given to them in transfusions in the period from 1 March 1988 when the Consumer Protection Act came into force. They claimed that the blood was defective within the meaning of the Act and that the defendants were liable even though the virus had not been identified until May 1988 and a screening test not introduced until 1989. The court ruled that the Act related to the safety of the blood and not to whether tests were available or had been carried out. 

Severe Disablement Allowance - Claimants who do not qualify for incapacity benefit because of insufficient National Insmance contributions may be entitled to this allowance if they have been imable to work for 28 weeks provided they are assessed at 80% disabled unless imder 20 when no assessment is necessary.
