Never leave a fire—even a cigarette—burning unattended. Fire can quickly spread out of control. 

Common dry cigarettes burn about 1 inch every 7 or 8 minutes in still air. If the fuse cord is placed 1 inch from the burning end of a cigarette a time delay of 7 or 8 minutee will result. 

NOTE Delay time may be adjusted by varying the burning length of the cigarette. Burning rate in still air is approximately 7 minutes per inch...

Because of alkalinity of SSS and the high concentration of SSS particles near the burning cone, nicotine (and other volatile smoke components) are distributed between the SSS PP and SSS VP PP-VP equilibrium for these compounds is not attained adjacent to the cigarette burning cone.

At RARDE we have built up a considerable database on studies of rocket propellants in configurations which are representative of in-service motors. Much of the work has been carried out with the so-called model scale motor (1). This features heavy end blocks connected by tie bars to ensure that case damage is restricted to the motor tube. Propellant charges are filled in the desired configuration, for example as a cylindrical, cigarette burning charge or with a central conduit and may be fixed to the tube as required. 

Note Delay time may be adjusted by varying the burning length of the cigarette. Burning rate in still air is approximately 7 minutes per inch (2.5 cm). Since this rate varies with environment and brand of cigarette, it should be tested in each case if accurate delay time is desired. 

Suspend the entire system vertically with the cigarette tip down. Light tip of cigarette. Switch will close and initiation will occur when the cigarette burns up to and through the string.
