Chromotropic acid number

The relative standard deviations for sets of 15 repetitive measurements were 1.5% and 0.4% at concentrations of 1 and 10 pg/ml, respectively. The results obtained from this system correlated well with those obtained from the chromotropic acid. The simplicity, versatility, good precision, high sampling rate, and relatively low cost of the system make it attractive for the analysis of large numbers of formaldehyde samples. 

Arsenazo I and a number of its analogues are derivatives of chromotropic acid (1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene-3,6-disulphonic acid). Arsenazo I is applied to the determination of rare earths, Th, U, Zr, Ti, Nb, and other metals.

An alcohol occasionally encountered in cases of poisoning. It is metabolized to formaldehyde and formic acid resulting in a metabolic acidosis. A number of other toxic effects can result including blindness. It can be estimated by gas-liquid chromatography or colorimetrically by oxidation to formaldehyde followed by its reaction with chromotropic acid.
