Chlorotrifluoromethane [75-72-9] M 104.5, m -180 , b -81.5 . Main impurities were CO2, O2, and N2. The CO2 was removed by passage through saturated aqueous KOH, followed by cone H2SO4. The O2 was removed using a tower packed with activated copper on Kieselguhr at 200°, and the gas dried over P2O5. 

Chlorotrifluoromethane (CFC 13) is produced by the disproportionation of CCI2F2 over AICI3 catalyst at 80-100 °C in near-quantitative conversion.

Soc., 1983, 105, 5048 After ozonisation of trifluoroethylene in chlorotrifluoromethane solution at —95°C, the reactor must only be allowed to warm slightly (to —88°C) during subsequent cryogenic distillation. When allowed to warm towards ambient temperature the reactor exploded violently. The residue from distillation is peroxidic and probably sensitive to sudden temperature increases. 

Barton and co-workers have studied30 the reactions of trifluoromethyl hypofluorite with various alkenes and found that (Z)- and (T -stilbene give vicinal fluoro trifluoromclhoxy products and vicinal difluorides in chlorotrifluoromethane or diethyl ether, while vicinal fluoro methoxy adducts predominate when the reaction is carried out in methanol at —78 C. svn Addition predominates in all cases on the basis of the fluorination regioselectivity of many alkenes, the formation of a /1-fluoro carbcnium ion is proposed.30...
