The atomic composition of polymers encompasses primarily non-metallic elements such as carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). In addition, recurrent elements are nitrogen (N), chlorine (Cl), fluoride (F) and sulfur (S). The so-called semi-organic polymers contain other non-metallic elements such as silicon (Si) in silicone or polysiloxane, as well as bor or beryllium (B). Although other elements can sometime be found in polymers, because of their very specific nature, we will not mention them here. For fluorine there is little evidence for positive behavior even in the formal sense. In oxygen fluorides the F atom is probably somewhat negative with respect to oxygen whereas in C1F evidence from chlorine nuclear quadrupole coupling shows that the actual charge distribution involves partial positive charge on Cl. 

Oxygen fluorides were described in Section 15.7. Iodine is the only halogen to form an oxide which is thermodynamically stable with respect to decomposition into its elements (equation 16.38). The chlorine and bromine oxides are hazardous materials with a tendency to explode.
