Chlorinated aliphatic compounds are globally distributed. Natural product organohalides such as chloromethane and chloramphenicol are probably produced in diverse soil environments. Many halogenated organic compounds are biosynthesized by marine organisms (Neidleman Geigert, 1986), so the oceans area source as well.
