Chloride control

Discussion. The turbidity of a dilute barium sulphate suspension is difficult to reproduce it is therefore essential to adhere rigidly to the experimental procedure detailed below. The velocity of the precipitation, as well as the concentration of the reactants, must be controlled by adding (after all the other components are present) pure solid barium chloride of definite grain size. The rate of solution of the barium chloride controls the velocity of the reaction. Sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid are added before the precipitation in order to inhibit the growth of microcrystals of barium sulphate the optimum pH is maintained and minimises the effect of variable amounts of other electrolytes present in the sample upon the size of the suspended barium sulphate particles. A glycerol-ethanol solution helps to stabilise the turbidity. The reaction vessel is shaken gently in order to obtain a uniform particle size each vessel should be shaken at the same rate and the same number of times. The unknown must be treated exactly like the standard solution. The interval between the time of precipitation and measurement must be kept constant. [Pg.729]

This article discusses the incineration of PVC wastes, which it reports is facing renewed scrutiny in the UK in the light of numerous breaches of emission limits for hydrogen chloride. The issue is likely to attract further attention as operators grapple with tighter hydrogen chloride controls proposed in the draft EC Directive on incineration. The chlorination of the lower silanes by halogenated solvents proceeds explosively in presence of oxygen, but catalytic presence of aluminium chloride controls the reaction. [Pg.381]

Che first 12 wk, after which weights were not checked. During the exposure period (5 d/wk for 4 wk), one control and 14 experimental mice died one control rat and 10 exposed rats died. Urethane was used as a positive control, because it induces tumors under some conditions. In this experiment, urethane caused a significantly greater incidence of tumors than the methylene chloride controls (38% vs. 22%). No tumorigenic effects were found in the CS-exposed animals. [Pg.140]

A kinetic reforming model must properly represent these catalyst effects. Thus, catalyst composition and state factors such as metal type and activity, acid activity through chloride control and alumina type, and the role of the second metal must be built in to the kinetics. [Pg.203]

The International Standard Organization (ISO) developed a corrosivity classification system verified through exposure that has been carried worldwide. The ISO classification system is based on the assumptions that only the time of wetness and the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere, SO2 and chlorides, control the corrosion rates of metals. Table 10.1 shows the Hst of ISO standards related to atmospheric corrosion of metals [39]. [Pg.464]

Then, sand d=0.025 cm, dp=2.65 d = diameter, mass density of sand and water) and POM was fed at 1 m upstream of the vegetated area with constant volume along the width. As for CPOM model, we selected PVC (polyvinyl chloride) controlled the specific weight ( /= 0.15 cm, dp = 1.26) in reference to examination as mentioned above. Each supplied sand and POM rate... [Pg.34]

Rock salt is obtained from mines and it is typically 95% sodium chloride. Alternatively, water is pumped into salt deposits to form brine underground. This brine is then removed through a brine well. After purification, the water is removed to make mechanically evaporated salt that is 99.99% sodium chloride. Controlled evaporation and fractional crystallization of seawater yields solar salt that is 99.7% sodium chloride. ... [Pg.438]

Many drugs and metabolites are acidic, basic, or amphoteric and can be protonated or deprotonated depending on their pH and pKg values. An ionization center can produce a chained species and thus a water-soluble ion. Conversely, neutral molecules are soluble in organic solvents such as methylene chloride. Control and manipulation of the pH of an aqueous phase is exploited in LLEs and in solid-phase extractions (SPEs), to maximize separation efficiency. [Pg.102]
