Chemotactic index

The above discussion relates to the process of random migration where cells do not move in a preferential direction. It is often the case, however, that soluble and insoluble factors causing cells to move in a preferential direction are present. Soluble agents that attract cells are called chemotactic, while those immobilized in the extracellular matrix are called haptotactic. In chemotactic or haptotactic migration, a third parameter must be determined to capture the directional preference of the migration process. This parameter is the chemotactic index (C/), which can be determined experimentally from single cell trajectories by the equation ... [Pg.280]

Oxidation of LDL cholesterol is one of the key steps in the initiation of atherosclerotic lesions by promoting injury to the arterial wall through several mechanisms, including growth factor and chemotactic protein expression, inflammation, and increased local macrophages [140]. Visioli et al. [117] have demonstrated that OL and HT strongly inhibit copper sulfate-induced oxidation of LDL, as result of measure of various indexes of lipid oxidation (vitamin E content, formation of thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances, lipid peroxides, levels of... [Pg.3622]

Despite the growing level of interest in its practical use as a status index, our understanding of the essential function of OC remains incomplete. Its affinity for calcium is less strong than that of the larger Gla proteins, but it binds avidly to hydroxyapatite and is chemotactic for osteoclasts... [Pg.489]
