The study of carbon and its compounds laid the foundation of a vast field of chemistry—organic chemistry. 

Organic chemistry This is the study of carbon and its compounds. It s I probably the most organized of the areas of chemistry — with good H reason. There are millions of organic compounds, with thousands more discovered or created each year. Industries such as the poljoner industry, the petrochemical industry, and the pharmaceutical industry depend on organic chemists. 

Of mineral origin inorganic chemistry is the study of all chemical elements and compounds, except carbon and its compounds certain simple carbon compounds, e.g., oxides and sulphides,... 

Although carbon compounds form the basis of organic chemistry, there is a well-developed and important inorganic chemistry of carbon as well. In fact, the chemistry of C6o and its derivatives, the fullerenes, is one of the most active new areas of inorganic chemistry. 

The chemistry of Ru and Os compounds with metal-carbon bonds is extremely extensive and complicated. Much of this chemistry involves organic groups such as C5H5 and its substituted derivatives and arenes, effectively as spectator ligands, other groups being present as ligands. There is also an extensive chemistry of carbonyls like Ru3(CO)12 and other Ru and Os clusters. We can deal here only with some of the simpler compounds, especially those with M—C, M=C, MCp, and M(arene) bonds. 

For example, although the story of carbon is as old as mankind itself, it is not fully told, and new chapters — sometimes new volumes -- are written from time to time. We appear to be in a period of a rapidly evolving carbon science right now. Not only is diamond film growth by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) an active area of research and development, but the discovery of fullerenes - the third allotrope of carbon - has opened up a whole new field of science with vast potential for both basic knowledge and applications. The paper that follows, authored by Professor Sir Harold W. Kroto, discusses the profound implications of the discovery of C q on the way we think about the structure of graphite and other layered materials. Because an important branch of chemistry — organic chemistry — deals with carbon and its compounds, carbon as a material quite naturally arouses the interests of chemists, particularly of materials chemists.
