Chemical cross-linking, polyphosphazenes

A chemical cross-hnking of MEEP was obtained by Shriver [606] by using polyethylene glycol (PEG) dialkoxide, which also forms polymer salt complexes. The cross-linked polymers were prepared by substituting a part (1 and 10 mole%) of the methoxyethoxyethoxy ethanol by PEG in the synthesis of MEEP. Contrary to the MEEP, the amorphous polymers obtained do not flow and are stable even at 140 °C. The maximum ionic conductivity at 30 °C, obtained after complexation with liSOjCFj, are 4.1x10" S cm for MEEP/PEG 1% complexed with 6.4 wt% salt and 3x10" S cm for MEEP/PEG 10% com-plexed with 8.9 wt% salt. These values are comparable with those obtained with the parent hnear polyphosphazenes. [Pg.207]

Cross-linked, sulfonic-acid-substituted, polyphosphazene-based PEMs have primarily been examined for potential use in DMFC applications due to their low MeOH crossover with reported values 2.5 times lower than that of Nafion. These materials have also been shown to display good thermomechanical and chemical stability (in a Fenton test). Sulfonamide-substituted polyphosphazenes have exhibited very high power densities that are comparable with Nation and may be suitable for use in PEMFC applications. ... [Pg.150]

Polyphosphazene-based PEMs are potentially attractive materials for both hydrogen/air and direct methanol fuel cells because of their reported chemical and thermal stability and due to the ease of chemically attaching various side chains for ion exchange sites and polymer cross-linking onto the — P=N— polymer backbone. Polyphosphazenes were explored originally for use as elastomers and later as solvent-free solid polymer electrolytes in lithium batteries, and subsequently for proton exchange membranes. [Pg.364]

Polyphosphazene has good chemical and thermal stability. Its polyphosphazene backbone is highly flexible. Various side chains can be introduced to this backbone readily. Cross-linking is needed in order to reduce the dimensional changes in the presence of methanol or water. The membranes have shown reasonable proton conductivity and low methanol crossover. However, an improvement in mechanical strength is needed for practical fuel cell applications. [Pg.284]
