A flavor differential item is an additive or combination of additives that when smelled or tasted has Httle, if any, character reminiscent of the named flavor. It gives roundness and fixation to the flavor. It may be added by the flavor chemist to confuse simulation of the flavor, and it is neither characteristic of, nor essential to, the intended flavor. The greatest examples of creativity are found in this area. [Pg.16]

In real life, other problems involving discrete variables may not be so nicely posed. For example, if cost is a function of the number of discrete pieces of equipment, such as compressors, the optimization procedure cannot ignore the integer character of the cost function because usually only a small number of pieces of equipment are involved. You cannot install 1.54 compressors, and rounding off to 1 or 2 compressors may be quite unsatisfactory. This subject will be discussed in more detail in Chapter 9. [Pg.117]

C12H22O2, Mr 198.30, Z PlOl.SkPa 240 °C, d 0.8901, Wp 1.4515, occurs in many essential oils either as one of its optical isomers or as the racemate. The odor of racemic citronellyl acetate differs little from that of the optical isomers. ( )-Citronellyl acetate is a liquid with a fresh-fruity rose odor. It is often used as a fragrance, for example, for rose, lavender, and geranium notes as well as for eau de cologne with citrus nuances. Since it is relatively stable to alkali, it can be used in soaps and detergents. Citrus flavors acquire speciflc character through the addition of citronellyl acetate it is also used to round off other fruit flavors. [Pg.46]

The concept of the philosopher s stone which appears under many names, was that of the existence of some substance which should act as a ferment just as yeast acts upon dough, some mystic substance which added to baser metals should induce the transmutation of larger quantities of these to gold or to silver. An idea of this character is of very early origin, hut any definite ideas as to the nature of this substance are lacking, and in the later alchemists, they take an infinity of forms. The philosopher s stone first appears about the seventh century in literature, hut it may be earlier. In the early centuries of alchemy, there was also developed a mass of symbolism which lost nothing of complexity and obscurity with the development of alchemy. Thus, the egg, symbol of the round universe, or of eternity the egg of the philosophers consisted, like the physical universe, of four components, white and yolk a skin and shell. These four constituents again are sometimes said to typify the four metals which form the basis for transmutation, copper, tin, lead and iron. [Pg.170]

The accessibility of each atom was calculated as discussed in the text. The numbers given are areas of the hydrosphere surface defined as the locus of possible centers of solvent molecules in contact with the given atom or atom group (CHi and CHa). The calculated areas in A2 have been rounded off to the nearest integer. Values between 0 and 0.5 A2 have been indicated by a + and atoms contacting the internal void have been indicated with an Atom designations are standard except that three or four character... [Pg.664]

The Sung Dynasty (960 - 1280 A.D.) was one link in a chain of imperial dynasties throughout the history of China. At the time of the manufacture of the coins used in this study, established practice dictated that the coins be cast in clay molds, in a traditional manner that was already nearly one thousand years old. Thus, the coins analyzed in this study are all round, with a square hole in the center, have four characters on one side and none on the other, and are said to be of copper, bronze, or brass (/, 2). The characters on such coins are read from top... [Pg.231]

But we must speak of candles as they are in commerce. Here are a couple of candles commonly called dips. They are made of lengths of cotton cut o(T, hung up by a loop, dipped into melted tallow, taken out again and cooled, then re-dipped until there is an accumulation of tallow round the cotton. In order that you may have an idea of the various characters of these candles,... [Pg.15]

Citrus juices are produced to have, as nearly as possible, the character and appearance of freshly extracted juice with a normal amount of juice cells and a slight amount of pulp. Occasionally very small seeds, or portions thereof, are expected. Only very small seeds or small fragments that could pass through round perforations of no more than 1/8 inch in diameter are... [Pg.305]
