CHARACTERIZATION OF ORGANOMETALLIC COMPOUNDS

We now look at some of the main methods of identifying a new complex, assigning its stereochemistry, and learning something about its properties. We will look at some applications of the most commonly used spectroscopic and crystallographic methods to organometallic chemistry. Citations to both introductory and more advanced treatments of the methods themselves are also included.

In this chapter, we have considered just a few types of reactions of organometallic compounds, principally the replacement of CO by other ligands and the reactions involved in syntheses of carbene and carbyne complexes. Additional types of reactions will be discussed in Chapter 14. We conclude this chapter with two examples of how spectral data may be used in the characterization of organometallic compounds. Further examples can be found in the problems at the end of this chapter and in Chapter 14.

These examples confirm that water as a solvent offers a number of variations to the possibilities offered by organic solvents in organometallic reactions and underline the importance of the analytical methods to characterization of organometallic compounds in water. There is still a huge potential for the use of water as the solvent of choice for homogeneous or biphasic catalysis. 

We conclude this chapter with two examples of how spectral data may be used in the characterization of organometallic compounds. Further examples can be found in the problems at the end of this chapter and in Chapter 14.
