Transmittance Characteristics

The sensitivity of an atomic absorption line is often described by its characteristic concentration, which is the concentration of analyte giving an absorbance of 0.00436 (corresponding to a percent transmittance of 99%). Eor example. Table 10.11 shows a list of wavelengths and characteristic concentrations for copper. [Pg.416]

Tables 4—6 Ust ASTM methods used for the characterization of PB and PMP. A number of specialized methods were developed for testing particular articles manufactured from polyolefins several of these determine the performance of PB and PMP film, including the measurement of the film s dart impact strength and tear strength. Dart impact strength is measured by dropping a heavy dart with a round tip on a stretched film. Tear resistance, which reflects the film s resistance to tear propagation, is measured with the Ehnendorf tear tester. Two values for the tear strength are usually reported, one in the machine dkection of the film and the other in the transverse dkection. Pipes manufactured from PB are tested by pressurizing them internally with water the time-to-burst failure is determined at various temperatures (46). The standard test method for haze and luminous transmittance (ASTM D1003) is used for the measurement of PMP optical characteristics. Vitreous siUca transmission curves are shown in Figure 7. The hydroxyl concentration for each siUca type is Hsted in Table 9. These curves represent only the general characteristics of the different siUca types and should not be used for calculations of transmittance. [Pg.507]

Some properties of silver are summarized in Table 1. The solar energy transmittance and neutron-absorption characteristics of silver are shown in Eigures 1 and 2, respectively. Thermal properties are given in Table 2. Other properties are given in References 1,3, and 4. [Pg.80]

Absorption spectroscopy records depletion by the sample of radiant energy from a continuous or frequency-tunable source, at resonance frequencies that are characteristic of various energy levels ia atoms or molecules. The basic law of absorption, credited to Bouguer-Lambert-Beer, states that ia terms of the iacident, Jq, and transmitted, light iatensities, the absorbance, M (or transmittance, T), is given by equation 1 ... [Pg.310]

Sonic Methods A fixed-point level detector based on sonic-propagation characteristics is available for detection of a liquid-vapor interface. This device uses a piezoelectric transmitter and receiver, separated by a short gap. When the gap is filled with liquid, ultrasonic energy is transmitted across the gap, and the receiver actuates a relay. With a vapor filling the gap, the transmission of ultrasonic energy is insufficient to actuate the receiver. [Pg.764]

The small molecular transmitter characteristic of the sympathetic nervous system is norepinephrine. However, epinephrine from the adrenal medulla is an important partner in systemic sympathetic actions. The actions of the sympathetic system are unique because in different smooth muscles responses are diametrically opposed they may be either by contraction or inhibition of contraction and... [Pg.197]

Luyben (1973) (see simulation example RELUY) also demonstrates a reactor simulation including the separate effects of the measuring element, measurement transmitter, pneumatic controller and valve characteristics which may in some circumstances be preferable to the use of an overall controller gain term. [Pg.159]

Sorensen and Blaustein 1985a). In view of the enhanced neuro-transmitter release that would be expected to accompany block of presynaptic K channels (Llinas et al. 1976), this mechanism could explain the PCP-induced "dopamine storm" (Rappolt et al. 1980). Such altered synaptic transmission at central synapses may underlie the disordered behavior characteristic of PCP intoxication. [Pg.51]

ACh regulates the cortical arousal characteristic of both REM sleep and wakefulness (Semba, 1991, 2000 Sarter Bruno, 1997, 2000). Medial regions of the pontine reticular formation (Figs. 5.2 and 5.7) contribute to regulating both the state of REM sleep and the trait of EEG activation. Within the medial pontine reticular formation, presynaptic cholinergic terminals (Fig. 5.1) that release ACh also are endowed with muscarinic cholinergic receptors (Roth et al, 1996). Autoreceptors are defined as presynaptic receptors that bind the neurotransmitter that is released from the presynaptic terminal (Kalsner, 1990). Autoreceptors provide feedback modulation of transmitter release. Autoreceptor activation... [Pg.121]

One defining characteristic of transmitter glutamate is its accumulation in synaptic vesicles. The concentration of... [Pg.270]

For radiant heating it is not sufficient to know just the magnitude of the incident heat flux to determine the temperature rise. We must also know the spectral characteristics of the source of radiation and the spectral properties (absorptivity, a, transmittance, t, and reflectance, f> ) of the material. Recall that... [Pg.167]

If the transmittance for a sample having all the same characteristics as those in problem 49 is measured as 72.6%, what is the concentration ... [Pg.201]
