The roughening transition has also been studied by computer simulation methods . Figure 42 shows characteristic configurations of a f.c.c. (100) surface in the simple solid-on-solid (SOS) model, calculated by Gilmer . The roughening temperature in this model corresponds to a parameter k T/ = 0.6. [Pg.270]

CONSTITUENT. I. In general, one of the elements or pans of a compound. 2. An identifiable component in the microstruclure of an alloy. It may be a phase or a characteristic configuration of several phases. [Pg.434]

Surfactants are chemical compounds that possess great surface activity. They act so diversely because of the unbalanced molecular structure. A surfactant molecule may be visualized as a tadpole or a mini-racquet. The head is the hydrophilic (water-loving), strongly polar portion and the tail is the hydrophobic (oU-loving) nonpolar portion. The head can be an anion, a cation, or nonion. The tail is a linear or branched hydrocarbon chain. It is this characteristic configuration that makes surfactants perform such diverse function in industry. [Pg.3023]

From the genenil form of the correlation diagram in Figure 6.18 it is evident that since barriers cun be overcome with the aid of thermal energy the initial excitation need not be into that stale that is represented by the characteristic configuration. In this case low temperature can prevent the reaction from taking place. Excitation of higher vibrational levels of one-and-the-same absorption band can enable the nuclei to move over the barrier in a hot reaction. [Pg.346]

However, when the orbitals of the characteristic configuration can interact with the orbitals involved in excitation, as is the case for the cleavage of the benzylic C—H bond in toluene or the a CC bond in a ketone, the crossing will be avoided and the barrier will be lowered depending on the interaction. The magnitude of the interaction is rather difficult to predict without a detailed calculation. [Pg.350]

In the case of dissociation of the various methyl-substituted anthracenes to form the corresponding anthrylmethyl radicals the relative magnitude of the interaction between the a orbitals of the characteristic configuration and the n and Jt orbitals involved in the excitation may be estimated quite easily. Assuming that the interaction is proportional to the square of the LUMO coefficient of the carbon atom adjacent to the methyl group, the lowest barrier is expected for the 9-methyl derivative and the highest one for the 2-methyl derivative. as may be seen from the squared coefficients given in formula 55. [Pg.350]
