This equation may be solved by the same methods as used with the nonreactive coupled-channel equations (discussed later in section A3.11.4.2). Flowever, because F(p, p) changes rapidly with p, it is desirable to periodically change the expansion basis set ip. To do this we divide the range of p to be integrated into sectors and within each sector choose a (usually the midpoint) to define local eigenfimctions. The coiipled-chaimel equations just given then apply withm each sector, but at sector boundaries we change basis sets. Let y and 2 be the associated with adjacent sectors. Then, at the sector boundary p we require... [Pg.976]

The electrophysiological effects of amiodarone may be a composite of several properties. In addition to prolonging action potential duration and refractory period in ad tissues of the heart, the compound is an effective sodium channel blocker (49), calcium channel blocker (50), and a weak noncompetitive -adrenoceptor blocking agent (51). Amiodarone slows the sinus rate, markedly prolongs the QT interval, and slightly prolongs the QRS duration (1,2). [Pg.121]

Most commercial marine diatomite deposits exploit accumulations resulting from large blooms of diatoms that occurred ia the oceans during the Miocene geological epoch. Diatomite sediments older than the Jurassic period are rare in the fossil record. Commercial deposits of diatomite are accumulations of the fossil skeletons, which can occur in beds as thick as 900 m in some locations (5). Marine deposits must have been formed on the bottom of protected basins or other bodies of quiet water, undisturbed by strong currents, in an environment similar to the existing Santa Barbara Channel or Gulf of California (3,6). [Pg.56]

Endurance Burn Under certain cou(itious, a successfully arrested flame may stabilize on the unprotected side of an arrester element. Should this condition not be corrected, the flame will eventually penetrate the arrester as the channels become hot. An endurance burn time can be determined by testing, which specifies that the arrester has withstood a stabilized flame without penetration for a given period. The test should address either the actual or worst-case geometry, since heat transfer to the element will depend on whether the flame stabilizes on the top, bottom, or horizontal face. In general, the endurance burn time identified by test should not be regarded as an accurate measure of the time available to take remedial action, since test conditions will not necessarily approximate the worst possible practical case. Temperature sensors may be incorporated at the arrester to indicate a stabilized flame condition and either alarm or initiate appropriate action, such as valve closure. [Pg.2301]

Simulations of water in synthetic and biological membranes are often performed by modeling the pore as an approximately cylindrical tube of infinite length (thus employing periodic boundary conditions in one direction only). Such a system contains one (curved) interface between the aqueous phase and the pore surface. If the entrance region of the channel is important, or if the pore is to be simulated in equilibrium with a bulk-like phase, a scheme like the one in Fig. 2 can be used. In such a system there are two planar interfaces (with a hole representing the channel entrance) in addition to the curved interface of interest. Periodic boundary conditions can be applied again in all three directions of space. [Pg.353]

C. and D. Monoolein/hexadecane membranes, 100 mV applied potential 1 M RbCl and 23 °C. Note that, during the time period of an average Gramicidin A channel (above), the N-acetyl desformyl Gramicidin A channel turns on and off many times and that the conductance step is smaller. The N-acetyl methyl replacing the formyl proton also crowds and destabilizes the head to head junction and results in less favorable lateral coordination of the cation at the junction. As well as being active, the immobilised enzyme also needs to be stable (active for a long period) and the support must promote this. The support must also have appropriate mechanical characteristics it should not disintegrate if used in a stirred tank reactor it should produce even flow (without channelling) in a packed bed reactor. Hie cost of the support is also important. [Pg.332]

Gauthier et al. [38] studied radial migration of spherical particles with a concentration of 5% by volume in the mixture for the following values of parameters a = 0.019 cm R = 0.4 cm V = 0.127 cm3/s, n = 0.64. At the start of the time period, a particle deficit was observed at the channel walls, three minutes later the particles were uniformly distributed in the channel, ten minutes later 75 % of particles... [Pg.133]
