Chalcone-type polymers

Extension of the use of the cinnamoyl unit to photocrosslinkable polymers is found in the numerous chalcone-type polymers prepared by Unruh and Smith 34>. Typical is a group of chalcone polymers which were prepared by reaction of poly(4-vinylacetophenone) with aromatic aldehydes such as benzaldehyde. [Pg.13]

The PAs, or condensed tannins, are polymers synthesized from flavan-3-ol monomer units. The phlobaphenes are 3-deoxy-PAs formed from flavan-4-ol monomers. The biosynthesis of both types of PAs follows the biosynthetic route of anthocyanins from chalcones through to the branch points to flavan-3-ol and flavan-4-ol formation. In this section, the specific enzymes forming the monomers are discussed, along with a discussion on the polymerization process. Although the chemistry of tannins is described in detail elsewhere in this book, it is useful to briefly mention the nature of the monomer subunit types and the polymer forms. [Pg.164]

Researchers at Degussa AG focused on an alternative means towards commercial application of the Julia-Colonna epoxidation [41]. Successful development was based on design of a continuous process in a chemzyme membrane reactor (CMR reactor). In this the epoxide and unconverted chalcone and oxidation reagent pass through the membrane whereas the polymer-enlarged organocatalyst is retained in the reactor by means of a nanofiltration membrane. The equipment used for this type of continuous epoxidation reaction is shown in Scheme 14.5 [41]. The chemzyme membrane reactor is based on the same continuous process concept as the efficient enzyme membrane reactor, which is already used for enzymatic a-amino acid resolution on an industrial scale at a production level of hundreds of tons per year [42]. [Pg.400]
