Quartz. In this seam, quartz content tends to be relatively low, with many samples containing less than 15% (Figure 3). High quartz contents (15-20% and above) are observed in the north-central part of the region, in Clarion and Jefferson Counties, and in several isolated areas along the eastern edge of the field area, such as Centre County. Low quartz contents occur in a zone extending from the south and southeast towards the northwest, and in Clearfield County. [Pg.45]

In 1350 or thereabouts cast iron was produced in Sussex, which county was at that period one of England s most important centres of the iron industry. The introduction of cast iron made it possible to utilise our ores to far greater advantage than would otherwise have been the case, and constituted an important advance in the metallurgy of iron. It was in the little Sussex village of Buxted that... [Pg.6]

The married quaners estate was purchased by the local authority in 1958 and a few years later Wiltshire County Council ruled that the workers hostel and the ninety-four married quarters must be demolished by the end of 1965. At that time 70% of the tenants were Enfield workers, a substantial proportion of the 200 people still employed underground. The wartime huts were subsequently replaced by a permanent estate of council houses, but the community centre and dance hall remained and were later taken over by Royal Enfield as a drawing office and stores. After 1970 the surface buildings were used for a short time by a local rubber company, but in the early 1980s the land was partially cleared to make way for a housing development, which was later cut back substantially when concern was raised about the stability of the mine workings under the site. [Pg.128]

Cuprorivaite occurs as vitreous tabular blue crystals, often in association with quartz iq.v.), and its formation is associated with centres of volcanic activity. It is a rare mineral and is related to the equally rare barium copper silicate mineral, effenbergerite q.v.). Cuprorivaite is known from only a few locahties worldwide, such as Sattelberg and Udersdorf (Germany), Messina (South Africa) and Klamath County (Oregon, USA). [Pg.136]
