Centrally Planned Economy Countries

To the present time, world potash production has been only partially based upon economic merit. In the countries of the former Soviet Union and in East Germany, the potash operations were entirely government owned and controlled. These centrally planned economy countries had constructive, but forced-use internal markets, and capital and operating costs were often not critical factors. Consequently, the potash industry in many of these countries employed excessive numbers of workers per tonne of potash produced. Often mines with low-grade ores or processing plants using relatively... [Pg.150]

Next to SBR, polybutadiene is the largest-volume synthetic rubber produced. Consumption was approximately 1,140,000 metric tons in 1990 (excluding centrally planned economy countries)." ... [Pg.612]

Includes estimates for countries having centrally planned economies in 1988. Includes estimates for China. [Pg.201]

Table 5.12 shows a breakdown of world phosphate rock production by grade as percentages of total production from 1971 to 1993. This is a partial breakdown of world production in that this table and the following tables (Tables 5.13 and 5.14) do not include data from the FSU or other countries with centrally planned economies. During this time period, a vast amount of growth occurred in the world pho hate rock... [Pg.115]

Table 3.4 also tallies consumption rates for most of the less-developed countries (LDCs), defined as such in Tilton (1990) as all countries except the industrialized nations and those categorized as having centrally planned economies. [Pg.67]

LDCs All countries except OECD nations and Centrally Planned Economies (CPE countries), as listed in Tilton (1990). [Pg.68]

Conventionally, analyses of the lead industry have focused almost entirely on the Western World. Most have eschewed consideration of developments within the remaining countries, grouped together as the Eastern Bloc or Centrally Planned Economies (CPE), even though these have accounted for a quarter or more of the world market for refined lead in recent years. This omission has been due mainly to problems of data availability and its reliability, compounded by the secrecy which, until recently, encompassed all aspects of economic activity in these countries. [Pg.21]

Central and eastern European countries (Section 9.4.3) had state-planned economies while under Communist domination. This group includes those countries that were part of the USSR such as Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. Slowly emerging countries (Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, etc.) are beginning to develop chemical industries. These countries, as well as Poland and Russia, are importers of chemical plants and technology. Some of the nations in this group have large supplies of natural resources. [Pg.380]
