A 2 IB. Braun airlift fermenter with a working volume of about 2000 ml was used. Sterile air is sparged through a sintered plate located near the bottom of the central concentric tube. Our FLAMES results clearly show that Scl contains two distinct stellar components with different spatial, kinematic and abundance properties [6]. Abstract. We present the first results of Call triplet observations from VLT/FLAMES for Sculptor, Fornax and Sextans dSphs. For each galaxy, we obtained accurate velocity and metallicity measurements for hundreds of stars out to and beyond the tidal radius. In each case, we find cfear evidence for the presence of two distinct steffar components with different spatiaf distribution and kinematics the metaf rich component is more centrally concentrated and kinematically colder than the metal poor one. [Pg.260]

Dwarf Spheroidal galaxies are the smallest and faintest galaxies known. They are typically dominated by old stellar populations (e.g. Sculptor and Sextans), but some of them (e.g. Fornax) exhibit more recent star formation episodes (2-8 Gyr ago). Analysis of the horizontal branch morphology shows that Red HB stars are more centrally concentrated than Blue HB stars which could be interpreted either as an age or a metallicity gradient or both ([1]). Only spectroscopic observations can unambiguously separate metallicity gradients and make a link with the kinematics. [Pg.260]

Thermal solar collectors are also available in so-called central concentrator or solar concentrator designs. In these configurations, a large number of independently movable flat mirrors (heliostats) are used to reflect the solar radiation onto a central receiver on the top of a tower. Each heliostat moves about two axes. The receiver typically is a vertical bundle of tubes in which the heat-transfer fluid (water or oil or molten salt) is heated by the reflected and concentrated insolation. Now consider a more realistic situation, where the tumor vessels are 200 /urn apart and uniformly perfused, but Pi has increased in the center so that fluid extravasation, and hence convective transport of macromolecules across vessels, has stopped. In such a case the only way macromolecules extravasate in the center is by the slow process of diffusion across vessel walls. Also, they can reach the center from the periphery (where is near zero) by interstitial diffusion. As stated earlier, if the distance between the center and periphery is — 1 mm, it would take days for them to get there, and if it is 1 cm, it would take months (Clauss and Jain, 1990). If, owing to cellular proliferation, the central vessels have collapsed completely, then there is no delivery of macromolecules by blood flow to the necrotic center (Jain, 1988 Baxter and Jain, 1990). In such a case there are no molecules available for extravasation by diffusion across the vessel wall, and consequently the central concentration would be even lower (Baxter and Jain, 1990). However, once the molecules have arrived there, the central region may serve as a reservoir for slow release later when the periphery has been cleared by plasma. [Pg.158]
