Annexin 5 detection assay Aimexin 5 staining allows rapid, specific, and quantitative identification of apoptosis in individual cells. Annexin 5 is a calcium-de-pendent phospholipid-binding protein. Early in the apoptotic process, cell surface phospholipid asymmetry is disrupted, and this leads to the exposure of phosphatidylserine (PS) on the outer leaflet of the cytoplasmic membrane.

Identification of the gene for HH followed in 1996 [18]. It is a novel non-classical MHC class I gene, designated HFE. Two mutations have been reported. A major mutation, C282Y, is found in the majority of Caucasian patients screened it is located in the a3 domain of the molecule. It disrupts the proper folding and assembly of the molecule and abolishes cell surface expression as the result of failure of the mutant protein to bind pi microglobulin [19]. A second mutation, H63D, is located in the al domain of the molecule. It does not interfere with cell surface expression and is found in 20% of patients, a frequency not too dilferent from that seen in the normal population.
