Cell constituents, protection

Catalase exerts a protective function by preventing the accumulation of H202 which might be harmful to cell constituents. The complete intolerance of obligate anaerobes to oxygen may result from their lack of this... [Pg.852]

When a cell synthesizes an enzyme able, as pancreatic enzymes are, to hydrolyze its own constituents, some kind of protection must be provided. The first assumption is that the cell contains inhibitors which afford a temporary protection (41) until the enzyme is evacuated. The second is that the cell at first synthesizes inactive molecules which are activated later in the intestinal tract. The third is that digestive enzymes are not mixed in situ with cell constituents but separated from them by impervious membranes. [Pg.151]

Endotoxin and Muramyl Dipeptide Derivatives. Bacterial cell wall constituents such as the Hpopolysaccharide endotoxin and muramyl dipeptide, which stimulate host defense systems, show radioprotective activity in animals (204). Although endotoxin is most effective when given - 24 h before irradiation, it provides some protection when adrninistered shortiy before and even after radiation exposure. Endotoxin s radioprotective activity is probably related to its Hpid component, and some of its properties may result from PG and leukotriene induction (204). [Pg.496]

The bacterial culture converts a portion of the supplied nutrient into vegetative cells, spores, crystalline protein toxin, soluble toxins, exoenzymes, and metabolic excretion products by the time of complete sporulation of the population. Although synchronous growth is not necessary, nearly simultaneous sporulation of the entire population is desired in order to obtain a uniform product. Depending on the manner of recovery of active material for the product, it will contain the insolubles including bacterial spores, crystals, cellular debris, and residual medium ingredients plus any soluble materials which may be carried with the fluid constituents. Diluents, vehicles, stickers, and chemical protectants, as the individual formulation procedure may dictate, are then added to the harvested fermentation products. The materials are used experimentally and commercially as dusts, wettable powders, and sprayable liquid formulations. Thus, a... [Pg.70]

An extract from Lactuca indica showed significant free radical scavenging activity, and protected phixl74 supercoiled DNA against strand cleavage and reduced oxidative stress in human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. On account of protocatechulic acid, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, caffeic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, luteolin 7-O-fT glucopyranoside, and quercetin 3-0-(3-g 1 ucopyranoside are the major antioxidative constituents (111). [Pg.221]
