CTs can be effective anti-nutrients against insects, especially at high concentrations as can be found in P. tremuloides (up to 18 % DW). ° Tannin effectiveness and mechanism of action has been debated, but it clearly depends both on variations in chemical structure and plant source, as well as on the biochemical conditions in the gut of the particular insect species. In P. tremuloides, CT levels were shown to be negatively correlated with gypsy moth and forest tent caterpillar larvae performance, although the effects were smaller than with the phenolic glycosides (C. P. Constabel and J. Spence, unpublished data). ... [Pg.125]

The statistical analyses of the data concerning the four caterpillar bioassays involves an analysis of variance (ANOVA) for a completely randomized design (CRD) followed by Dunnett s test for each experiment. The ANOVA are done to get a preliminary feel if the treatments had any effect on the test organism. Dunnett s method is chosen because we are interested in determining whether the mean of the control group is significantly different than each of the means of the treatments. Experimental treatments can consist of crude extracts or pure compounds. [Pg.866]

How does Caterpillar organize the system to provide this service Data from Caterpillar presentations show that service level from the dealer was 81% immediately service level from the nearest depot was 83% within twenty-four hours, and service level after a system wide search was 98% within forty-eight hours. [Pg.128]

Serviceability Caterpillar designed the 797 to reduce service time thus ensuring maximtun availability. Routine maintenance points, such as fluid fill and check points, are close to ground level. Easily accessed connectors allow technicians to download data and to calibrate machine functions, thus extending maintenance intervals which further increases availability. The 797 is also designed to make major components accessible, which effectively reduces removal, installation, and in-truck maintenance time for all drivetrain components. [Pg.280]

Nitrogen-containing sugar analogs have recently been described fi-om several Fabaceae species. One of them, 2-5-dihydroxymethyl-3,4-hydroxypyrrolidine (DMDP), was first isolated form leaves and roots of Derris elliptica (10). These sugar mimics were shown to be powerfid glucosidadse inhibitors (11). DMDP acts as an antifeedant for locusts and is toxic for certain caterpillars and beetles. It was isolated in our laboratory fi-om the roots of Derris urucu (Mathias, L. Parente, J. P., unpublished data.)... [Pg.81]
