Categories of pharmaceutical

Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is Hsted in the 1990 United States Pharmacopeia under the categories of pharmaceutic aid (suspending agent, tablet binder, viscosity-increasing agent), and cathartic tablets. 

Table 6.1 lists legal and professional requirements for each type of licence issued in each country, as well as requirements regarding import permits for different types of pharmaceuticals. The numbers in each category of pharmaceutical establishment licensed in the 10 countries are presented in Figure 6.1.

The activated sludge process has been found to be the most efficient treatment for various categories of pharmaceutical wastewater [14,15,19,42-46]. It has also been reported that this process can be successfully employed for the removal of tert-butanol, a common solvent in pharmaceutical wastewater that cannot be degraded by anaerobic treatment [44]. At a volumetric loading rate of 1.05 kg COD/m day, HRT (hydraulic retention time) of 17 hours, and mixed liquor dissolved oxygen concentration of 1 mg/dm, the tert-butanol can be completely removed by the activated sludge process. 

In addition to biological and chemical drugs, two other categories of pharmaceutical products deserve brief mention animal drugs and human medical devices. Both are beyond the scope of the present chapter. 

Pharmaceutical products which may possess potentially harmful effects or high risks to health, if not used properly, will be enlisted in the last category whose sale is strictly controlled. In any case, the last three categories of pharmaceutical products require licenses for manufacturing, importation and sale practice. But all categories of pharmaceutical products require product registrations. 

Storage areas should be of sufficient capacity to allow the orderly storage of the various categories of pharmaceutical products, namely bulk and finished products, products in quarantine, and released, rejected, returned or recalled products.

Unlike many categories of pharmaceutical agents, the group muscle relaxants has no reference to a common structure or mechanism of action. Whereas local anesthetics indicates a group of pharmaceutical agents with similar structure and mechanism of action, the approximately ten drugs of the muscle relaxants category have virtually no shared structure and no shared mechanism of action. 

Almost 800 chemicals have been approved by the EDA for use as inactive additives in drug products. Labeling regulations do not require that they be hsted on product labels [75], Table 10.7 lists the categories of pharmaceutical excipients in use [34],...
