Catalytic production of hydrogen

The production of H2 from some by-products of biomass conversion is also a possible option, which also requires the development of, new, more stable, more efficient catalysts that operate directly in the liquid phase. The catalytic production of hydrogen from more valuable products, such as bioethanol, should be reconsidered with appropriate economic assessments that take into account the alternative possible uses of these products. 

Catalytic production of hydrogen from methanol has been studied for the last 30-40 years and decomposition of methanol to CO and H2 (Equation 6.5) has been utilized commercially in the steel industry for decades as a method for providing carbon monoxide for the carbonization of steel. 

Combining these two half reactions leads to catalytic production of hydrogen and oxygen,25 26 although quantum yields are very low (<0.001).26... 

The electrochemical reduction mechanism of 6-thiopurine 1671 is pH-dependent and rather complex, with formation of 4 waves in the pH range 0-9 (Scheme 27). Coulo-metry at the potential of wave I revealed rapid release of H2S, but catalytic production of hydrogen ions prevented determination of the electron number. The postulated proposed mechanism of reduction was linked to protonation and, as for 4-thio-uracil139), involves the thione form, the final product being the tetrahydroderivative.
