When ILs are used in catalytic processes, reaction products, byproducts and residual reactants need to be separated from the solvent and the catalyst, which are recycled and re-used. The product solubility can be difficult to predict because distribution of products can depend on reactant conversion, residence time, and operating conditions. Consecutive reactions can provide byproducts with different polarities or functionalities. The existence of these byproducts can modify the partitioning of the desired product in the organic effluent/ionic liquid system (see also Section 5.2.1.3). 

Usually, during catalytic processes, reactions characteristic for a given process and occurring one by one take place they are known as elementary reactions. 

In this process, coal is gasified to give synthesis gas, which is then converted to methanol by a heterogeneous catalytic process. Reaction of methanol with acetic acid by reactive distillation gives methyl acetate, which is then reacted with CO to give acetic anhydride. The cellulose ester is made by reacting acetic anhydride with cellulose. The acetic acid required for the synthesis of methyl acetate comes from recycling the acetic acid produced in the manufacture of cellulose ester.
