In a classical sense, a catalyst is regarded as a chemical species that increases the rate of a reaction (compared to the rate of the same reaction in the absence of catalyst under exactly similar experimental conditions) without being consumed during the course of the reaction. But now there is a general perception that a chemical species or a molecular aggregate can either increase or decrease [Pg.95]

Interaction between a catalyst molecule or molecular aggregate and a reactant molecule may involve one or more than one of the following molecular or atomic interactions  [Pg.97]
