We will focus on one experimental study here. Monovoukas and Cast studied polystyrene particles witli a = 61 nm in potassium chloride solutions [86]. They obtained a very good agreement between tlieir observations and tire predicted Yukawa phase diagram (see figure C2.6.9). In order to make tire comparison tliey rescaled the particle charges according to Alexander et al [43] (see also [82]). At high electrolyte concentrations, tire particle interactions tend to hard-sphere behaviour (see section C2.6.4) and tire phase transition shifts to volume fractions around 0.5 [88]. [Pg.2687]

Class IC antiarrhythmic drugs such as flecainide or propafenone block the Na+ channel (open state propafenone open and inactivated state) with a very long dissociation time constant so that they alter normal action potential propagation. Flecainide increased mortality of patients recovering from myocardial infarction due to its proarrhythmic effects (CAST study). PVC s alone with Class IC drugs was not sufficient to reduce mortality in the specific post-infarction population chosen for the CAST study. Synthetic polypeptides provide very useful model systems for examining some of the problems of protein structure, as has already been discussed in Section IV,C,2. In the course of an important and extensive series of investigations of these compounds by Bamford, Elliott, and their co-work-ers (summarized in Bamford et al., 1956), it was shown that films of polypeptides cast from different solvents exhibited two different structures, designated a and which were distinguished by two different classes of infrared spectra (Table V). The a-form is now known to be associated with the a-helix, and the /3-form with extended interchain structures. These results suggested that the a transformation in polypeptides could be achieved by appropriate solvents. This conclusion for these particular experiments, however, has been disputed by Blout and Asa-dourian (1956), who suggest that the polypeptide samples employed in these experiments were mixtures of a- and 8-structures in the sohd state, and that extraction of one or the other form by particular solvents was involved in these film-casting studies, rather than a true a —> /3-transformation. [Pg.35]
