Cementation is the process of recovery of metals from dilute aqueous solution by reductive precipitation using another metal with a more negative electrode potential, e.g., Cu + Fe° Cu° + Fe. The product, in this case cement copper, is relatively impure because of iron contamination. However, cementation can be used in conjunction with a solvent extraction flow sheet to remove small amounts of a metallic impurity, for example, removal of copper from a nickel solution by cementation with nickel powder. Here the dissolved nickel conveniently augments the nickel already in solution. 

The zeta potential is the difference in potential between that of the total dispersed system and that of the layer at the interface of the dispersed particles (in this case cement) and the dispersing medium (water). Many studies have been made of the effect of superplasticizers on the zeta potential of the cement-water system from which the following conclusions can be drawn ... 

Procedure. Site Preparation. A five-spot pattern of test wells (Figure 4) was drilled to approximately 57 ft and completed with 7-in. casing cemented to the surface. The wells, deepened to 100 ft with a 6%-in. bit, were tested to determine the extent of air communication between the center well (well 5) and the surrounding wells. These tests indicated fractures 1-3 ft in height between depths from 67 to 90 ft.

Although aluminum and zinc are soft, ductile metals (unlike chromium), the intermetaUic compounds formed with iron, are brittle and hard in all cases. Cementation coatings are therefore particularly useful where a moderate degree of abrasion resistance is required. 

The technology of concrete soaking with monomeric substance and subsequent m situ" polymerization is relatively new. According to Worn [171], it was initiated by Steinberg in 1968. Beside of the polymer impregnated concretes, there are also the polymer concretes (resin concretes) without cement and the polymer-eement concretes in the latter case cement is mixed with monomer and water to produce the concrete mixture . This question will be discussed in Chap. 10. 

In one case, cement hardening prevented re-inser-tion of the stylet of the needle. After the needle was extracted, a paravertebral cement leak was detected. Two days later, the cement fragment was extracted percutaneously. The stylet should be repositioned before removal of the needle whenever possible in all cases. If the stylet could not be re-inserted, the needle is removed under fluoroscopy control to detect leak. 

In rare cases cement clinker may moreover contain small amounts of, for example, alkali sulphates and glassy phase. 

A convenient way to attain a very high degree of linear polarization is to use prisms made of the birefringent material calcite (CaCOs). The arrangements in Glan-Taylor and Glan-Thompson polarizers are shown in Fig. 6.46. Both these polarizers consist of a combination of two prisms, in the first type air-spaced, in the second case cemented. The prism angle has been chosen such that the ordinary beam is totally internally reflected and absorbed laterally in the prism, while the extraordinary beam is transmitted into the... 

High In this case, cement consumption growth reasumes the pace of the period 1970-80. That means that the zone is able to overcome its economic troubles. Total consumption will be 158 million in 2000, that is 270 Kg per capita. 

In most cases, cement lines exposed in this manner are easily observable, but when the cement used has a loading similar to, or identical to, the substrates, it may be necessary to examine thin sections at higher magnifications.
