Cardioactive drugs

Concomitant use with sympathomimetic drugs, p-adrenoceptor antagonists, calcium channel-entry blockers and other cardioactive drugs may result in bradyarrhythmias, bigemini, or tachyarrhythmias. Cardiac rhythm should be closely monitored and drug dosages carefully adjusted. Digoxin is mainly excreted by the kidneys and plasma levels should be closely monitored in patients with acute renal failure and in those whose renal function is compromised. [Pg.151]

Calcium deficiency in blood plasma causes muscle cramps, twitching and eventually convulsions. If the blood calcium level falls, calcium is leached from the bones, causing osteomalacia. A group of cardioactive drugs known as the Ca antagonists block influx of Ca2+ into infarcted, dying heart muscle cells following myocardial infarction.55,80... [Pg.772]

Cardiovascular toxicity is also frequently encountered in poisoning. Hypotension may be due to depression of cardiac contractility hypovolemia resulting from vomiting, diarrhea, or fluid sequestration peripheral vascular collapse due to blockade of -adrenoceptor-mediated vascular tone or cardiac arrhythmias. Hypothermia or hyperthermia due to exposure as well as the temperature-dysregulating effects of many drugs can also produce hypotension. Lethal arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation can occur with overdoses of many cardioactive drugs such as ephedrine, amphetamines, cocaine, tricyclic antidepressants, digitalis, and theophylline. [Pg.1397]

This text was finalized at a time when the details of S7B were not yet outlined. During recent years there has been an increase of regulatory concern. The awareness that non-cardioactive drugs, used for sometimes non-life threatening diseases, can cause QT prolongation, and serious dysrhythmias such as TdP was intensified. [Pg.769]

Five characteristics of a separation method determine its practicality speed, simplicity, applicability, reproducibility, and cost. Speed is important because, with assays intended for clinical use, a result available to the clinician on the day that the sample is taken is of greater value than the same result reported the following day estimation of a cardioactive drug... [Pg.283]

Interactions of mexiletine with other cardioactive drugs have been reviewed (48). The most important are beneficial interactions with beta-adrenoceptor antagonists, quinidine, and amiodarone in the suppression of ventricular tachydysrhythmias. During these interactions the... [Pg.2331]

Pharmacokinetic parameters of digoxin and other cardioactive drugs are summarized in Table 33-2. Digoxin, disopyra-mide, lidocaine, procainamide, and quinidine are usually quantified by immunoassay. HPLC methods to quantify the other cardioactive drugs are reviewed in a previous edition of this chapter. ... [Pg.1256]
