Carbonyl antiferroelectrics

Along with the prediction and discovery of a macroscopic dipole in the SmC phase and the invention of ferroelectric liquid crystals in the SSFLC system, the discovery of antiferroelectric liquid crystals stands as a key milestone in chiral smectic LC science. Some connectors are listed in Figure 27(b). Almost all AFLC compounds have a carbonyloxy connector between the asymmetric carbon atom and the ring in the core, but some compounds [55] have a carbonyl or oxycarbonyl connector (Figure 29). Inui [56] studied the alkylcarbonyloxy connectors and found that -C2H4COO- exhibits antiferroelectricity but -CH2COO- does not although -CH=CH- is better regarded as included in the core, cinnamates also show antiferroelectricity.

Quite recently, Prof. Fukuda has determined that the chiral alkyl chain makes a bent angle >54.7° (the magic angle) with the core axis and that the carbonyl group near the chiral center lies on the tilt plane in antiferroelectric SmCA on the basis of the polarized infrared spectroscopy.
